Case Study: Stroud Community Agriculture Buying Land, Community Growing

Built on cooperation and mutual support the risks and rewards of farming are shared between the farmers and consumers. The consumers commit themselves to supporting the farm and providing a fair income for the farmers. The farmers can then develop the health and fertility of the farm, its wildlife and environment. All the produce from the farm is shared between the supporting consumers or sold locally if there is a surplus.

Case Study: Stroud Woods, Gloucestershire Finding Land, Buying Land

Text and video cases studies (made by the Soil Association and Groundwork respectively) highlighting the work of Stroud Woodland Cooperative, who have acquired a piece of woodland called Folly Wood. Stroud Woodland Co-op was set up as an Industrial and Provident Society

Case Study: Talgarth Mill, Wales Leasing, Buying Land, Community Growing

An innovative land purchase by a Community Interest Company has given a unique, community-run flour mill space for gardening at a peppercorn rent.

Case Study: Terre de Liens Buying Land

Terre de Liens is a French civil society organisation created in 2003 to address the difficulties faced by organic and peasant farmers in securing agricultural land. Land prices are high and land market so competitive that access to land has become a major bottleneck for farmers seeking new farms or additional land to maintain their current activities.

Case Study: The Book People, Surrey Community Growing, Landowners

Staff at The Book People have been growing their own produce for four years, courtesy of a popular workplace garden scheme set up in 2009. There are 31 garden plots available for use over three sites and all are free of charge for staff to use. The largest is at the head office in Godalming, where an old kitchen garden has been converted into a series of 1 x 2 metre plots. The other two are on industrial sites at Bangor and Haydock, next to book warehouses. These are particularly appreciated as there is little green space locally.

Case Study: The Grove Community Garden Finding Land, Offering Land, Communicating, Community Growing, Landowners

The former site of the Fountain Brewery in the Fountainbridge area of central Edinburgh, which has been earmarked for development in the future, has been the focus of a partnership between Grosvenor, an international property development business, and a local community group to turn part of the site into a 'meanwhile' community garden.

Case Study: Whistlewood Common, Derbyshire Buying Land

A group in Melbourne, Derbyshire have launched a community share offer to buy 10 acres of former market garden land to create Whistlewood Common, which will be used for food production and associated uses. The project’s aim is to create a productive landscape where every plant, shrub and tree is edible or otherwise useful to the local community.

Case Study: Wild Elements Finding Land, Leasing, Community Growing

Wild Elements is a social enterprise based in North Wales, dedicated to getting people outdoors and closer to nature in a fun way, through forest schools and outdoor play schemes and community projects and events. It was set up by Thomas Cockbill and Resi Tomat in March 2013. They had previously been working for the National Trust at Penrhyn Castle, near Bangor, Gwynedd, carrying out education activities. When that project finished, they could see a need for nature-based play services in the local area.
